Artist’s Statement

Submerged in water, the body is weightless. The idolised idea of being and feeling light is captured in my self-portraits immersed in a bath. The intimate act of bathing also invites self-examination.
The fragility of our beauty is likened to the temporal beauty of picked flowers floating on the surface of the water, blooming evanescently, delicate and easily influenced.
Submerged into a society with unrealistic expectations, we mask ourselves, only ever being authentic when alone and in an intimate and vulnerable space. I see distorted reflections of myself as I try to fit into the standards of society and its media.
Is our worth determined by our appearance, or by the values and motives which lie within our deeper selves? Do we need to change our appearance in order to be ‘acceptable’?
